Start with an original photo on the correct background
The US Department of State requires a recent colour photo against a plain white or off-white background. It also says not to use software, phone apps, filters or artificial intelligence to alter the image. Set up the background and even lighting before you take the photo instead of replacing them later.
Place the camera at eye level, face it directly and leave enough space around the head and shoulders for the 2x2 crop. The live guide in Passport Booth can help with position, but the official rules remain the final reference.
Prepare the 2x2-inch size
A printed US passport photo must be 2 inches by 2 inches. The head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches. Select the United States and passport preset before reviewing the available results.
For a paper application, choose a print layout, print it at Actual Size or 100%, and measure the finished square before cutting. Automatic Fit to Page or borderless cropping can change the scale.
Review before submitting
Check focus, expression, head position, lighting, background and image age against the current Department of State page. Do not rely on a badge or score as an approval promise. The Department of State makes the final decision.

Can I replace the background for a US passport photo?
